Strawberries are more than just a treat for the taste buds.

Scientists at the University of Warwick in England have discovered that natural chemicals found in strawberries activate a protein called “Nrf2″ that boosts antioxidant activity in the body.

 It also lowers blood fats
 and cholesterol, helping to keep the arteries clear.

Eating strawberries has previously been found to counter post-meal blood glucose and low density lipoprotein, 


or “bad” cholesterol and, therefore, decrease risk of diabetes and heart disease; 


but this is the first time that strawberry extracts have been proved to actively stimulate proteins that offer protection against disease.

These foods have the phytochemicals sulforaphane and indoles, which both prevent cancer. 

They are also good for the circulatory system and have good vitamin B and minerals.

Some of the yellower green vegetables have carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin that help to prevent cataracts and eye disease, as well as osteoporosis.

They are also known to help memory function and urinary tract health and to reduce free radical damage.
